Ecosystem services:
powerful, essential, and irreplaceable.
While the term ecosystem
services may not be widely recognized by the general public, these natural
processes are quietly sustaining life on Earth—and the global economy. From the
clean air we breathe to the food we eat and the climate stability we depend on;
ecosystem services are the backbone of human survival.
In general, ecosystem
services are the direct and indirect benefits that humans receive from
nature, such as clean air and water, food, pollination, flood control, and
mental well-being, all dependent on healthy environments. These benefits
are categorized into provisioning services (food, water, raw materials),
regulating services (climate regulation, flood protection, water purification),
cultural services (recreation, cultural heritage, mental health), and
supporting services (nutrient cycling, soil formation, which enable the other services.
Nepal’s Rich Ecosystem:
From Mountains to Plains.
Nepal- from high Himalayas
to flat terai, its diverse ecosystem plays critical role to support human life.
It includes:
Provisioning
services in Nepal include fertile farmland, pollinators like
bees and butterflies that support crops, and a vast forest cover (over 45%)
that provides firewood, fruits, medicinal plants, and timber. Rivers such as
the Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali offer drinking water, irrigation, and
hydroelectric energy.
Regulating
services are crucial in Nepal’s climate-vulnerable terrain.
Forests absorb carbon dioxide and help stabilize the climate, while wetlands
and forested hills reduce the risks of floods and landslides during the
monsoon.
Supporting
services include the natural formation of soil in mountainous
areas, nutrient recycling through organic matter, and the conservation of rare
species like the Bengal tiger, red panda, and one-horned rhinoceros — all
contributing to ecological balance.
Cultural
services are deeply embedded in Nepalese identity. The
country’s natural beauty draws tourists from all over the world, while sacred
mountains, rivers, and forests play a key role in the spiritual lives of its
people. Indigenous communities like the Gurung, Rai, and Tharu preserve
traditional knowledge and practices that help manage natural resources
sustainably.
Human Impact: A Dangerous Shift
Being one of the most
climate vulnerable countries these services are in danger. we, humans are
creating a problem like, pollution, warming, waste, deforestation which hinders
and decrease nature services. We generally take this service for granted but once
lost, they are so difficult and expensive to restore back. The threats are
increasing and the time to act is now. Let’s think deeply, do we work for
selfish people, do we work for them who destroy us, create problems and
suffocate us, who throw waste on us, who doesn’t care about us? Absolutely No,
but with all the problems, nature still work 24/7 for balance and provide us so
many services which helps us to survive.
Growing Threats to Ecosystem Services
It is facts that
ecosystem services are increasingly threatened by human activities. Deforestation,
pollution, unsustainable farming, overgrazing, and climate change are degrading
ecosystems around the world. This degradation reduces nature’s ability to
provide clean water, fertile soil, and climate stability. The loss of ecosystem
services can lead to food insecurity, health problems, and greater
vulnerability to natural disasters. Human activities, if not changed, will make
fragile destroy the natural functions we all rely on. Recognizing and
addressing the threats to ecosystem services is not just an environmental
issue, but a human survival issue. Immediate action is needed at all levels to
protect nature, preserve biodiversity, and ensure a safe and sustainable future
for all.
For human well-being and
sustainable growth, ecological services must be preserved. Ecosystem health and
biodiversity are maintained through the preservation and restoration of natural
ecosystems including grasslands, wetlands, and forests. By reducing soil
erosion and chemical runoff, sustainable farming practices maintain the land's
productivity. The environment and aquatic bodies are kept clean by controlling
waste and reducing pollution. The prudent use of natural resources is also
guaranteed by conservation initiatives that empower local people.
Preserving Ecosystem Services: The Way
Forward
Planning and development
from government level, that takes ecosystem services into account helps strike
a balance between environmental preservation and economic growth. To assist
conservation initiatives, particularly in fragile areas, international
financing and cooperation are equally crucial.
As the threats to
ecosystem services continue to grow, taking immediate and effective action
is essential. These services are the foundation of human health, economic
development, and environmental stability. Thankfully, there are many control
measures we can take at the individual, community, national, and global
levels to protect and restore ecosystems.
Join together and spread
awareness
Don’t look for anybody to step up, you are the
one, take a step toward sustainability, protect ecosystem, their services which
protect you.
